The source presents information on the violence experienced by black people in working to accomplish equality. It highlights the many riots which occurred when African Americans were denied their basic rights. This article offers examples of peaceful protests which were turned violent by disapproving police officers and white supremacists. The 60s was a tense decade, and many people were angry. This source helps me to see the mindset and emotions of people during this decade, and the Civil Rights Movement.

The article analyzes the role of African American politicians throughout history. It explores how they were able to break into politics, and hen what they accomplished once present. This is very helpful in demonstrating the steps black people had to take to achieve equality. It demonstrates the specific steps the Civil Rights Movement had to take in order to succeed.

This article gives insight into the founding and spreading of the Black Panther Party. The Party was an integral part of the new wave of the Civil Rights Movement. It followed the teaching of Malcolm X and took a more aggressive approach to civil rights. This source is important to my thesis because it examines the Party which was influential during 1965 and the subsequent years.

The Black Power Movement was indicative of the new wave of civil rights. It changed the social attitude and celebrated black culture. The source provides a lot of useful information on the movement. I use this article in my thesis to explore the role of the movement in improving the rights of people of color.

This source provides information of the feminist movement of the 60s. It focuses primarily on who was involved, why they were involved, and how they were involved. The article focuses on the stark contrast between older feminists and younger feminists. This has proved to be very useful because it offers examples of different way in which women brought about change. It demonstrates the specifics of their actions and the consequential impact they had on their society and fellow citizens.

 

"Contraception: Freedom from Fear." Time 07 Apr. 1967. Web. 18 Jan. 2018.
 

This magazine article was published in 1967 and explains the invention of “the pill.” It explores the many different benefits and drawbacks of the oral birth control pill. Because the article was published during the sixties, it accurately reflects the sentiments of the time period. “The pill’ changed the lives of many women by freeing them from fear of unwanted pregnancy. This invention was a major step in the progression of the feminist movement.

This source provides information on the military aspects of the Vietnam War. It explores the different actions taken and decisions made. It provides an understanding of another side of the war. For most of my thesis, I am focusing on the domestic side of Vietnam, yet this source offers insight into the foreign aspect of the war.

This article examines closely the occurrence of campus revolts in the 1960. It covers the cause of various revolts, and the consequences. This source provides insight into the ideals of young people at the the time. From the article, I can gather the general sentiment of the nation’s youth. Their revolts were in response to many different tragedies and atrocities.

The 1960s analyzes the different feminist movements of the decade. The women’s rights advocates were generally run by middle-aged white women, while the women’s liberationists were younger and raised with different ideals. The two movements sought to bring about different types of change in different ways. This book provides the facts of the women’s movement. It is full of details which clarify any discrepancies in my research and explain the zeitgeist of the time period.

 

Friedan, Betty. The Feminine Mystique. New York: W.W. Norton, 2013. Print.

 

The Feminine Mystique examines the role of suburban women in the sixties. The author, Betty Friedan, states that many women are dissatisfied in their lives as housewives, and this was normal. Women had ambitions and aspirations and being a stay-at-home mom did not always lead to fulfillment. Many women struggled to understand where they fit into the morphing society of the sixties. Friedan urges women to stand up and speak out.

This article examines closely the impacts of Vietnam on the United States domestically. The people were more involved in this war than any other in the nation’s history. The public had access to videos and photos which led them to form independents opinions. The people voiced these opinions and forced the government to react. This source supplies a lot of detail and analysis of the Vietnam War and the culture of the time.

The article reviews Betty Friedan’s The Feminine Mystique. The source studies the impact it had on society at the time of its publishing. It highlights the many changes it caused later in the sixties. This helps me to understand a large catalyst of the feminist movement. This book was a leading factor in the change of the minds of Americans. The monumental book changed the culture of our nation and the dynamics of the average American family.

This book offers a complete analysis of the year 1965, as well as the decade in which it falls. It looks at the events of the time through the lense of music. The source provides a lot of examples of songs written about the 60s during the 60s. This helps me in deciding which songs to play in my documentary film. The focus on the year 1965 is extremely helpful in finding events and movements which occurred during that year.

This article provides information on Vietnam protest songs. The music of the movement is truly important in understanding the time period and the sentiments of the time period. The source provides insight as to which songs were influential and notable. This is helpful for my thesis because I am analyzing the Vietnam War and the culture changes surrounding it.

This source examines the events that led to the U.S.’s involvement in the Vietnam War. It also focuses on the major events of the war. It highlights the events that led to the failures of the nation in Vietnam. The article is helpful in understanding the order of events.

 

Seltzer, Gregory L. The 1965 Project: The Intersection of History and Music in 1965.

This book is extremely helpful for my thesis, in that it makes a similar argument to the one I am making. It argues that 1965 is a monumental year in the development of many different genres of music. The source provides specific examples of songs and albums. It covers the entire year from January to December. Not only does it focus on the music, but also on the history of the year.

This book explores the many different aspects of Vietnam. I can see clearly the effect the war had on our nation. The book examines all wars of American history, which allows me to see the progression of Americans’ views on war. This source provides a lot of information about the Vietnam War, both foreign and domestic, which was a pressing subject during the 1960s.

This source highlights major protests in opposition to the Vietnam War. The many protests were indicative of the unrest and disorder present in the United States during the sixties. The protests demonstrate the changing of culture occurring throughout the nation. The united States would forever be a different after the sixties because of the drastic change in culture.

This website provides the official Voting Rights Act of 1965. It offers the full and original text which allows me to quote the act. This act was very crucial to the progression of Civil Right in the sixties.

This source examines the specific legislation of the Voting Rights Act. It allows me to see the exact events which led to the act, and then it’s impacts on history. This is helpful in supporting my thesis, especially because the act was passed in 1965. It shows the progression of the Civil Rights Movement during that specific year.

 

"Watts Riots." History.com. A&E Television Networks, 2017. Web. 20 Jan. 2018.

 

The Watts Riots mark the state of turmoil plaguing the black community during the late sixties. They are the culmination of decades of oppression and discrimination. This source analyzes the riots in depth and provides helpful information. I mention extensively the riots in my thesis, and this article offers a lot of useful insight. The Watts Riots took place over six days in Los Angeles and sparked many riots across the nation.
